SUBJECT: MEMBERSHIP IN NCPOA
The Northern California Peace Officers Association-NCPOA is a well established professional organization that traces its roots back to the 1930s in Northern California. Written records of the organization go back to 1952 when the group formally selected Sacramento Chief of Police Jim Hicks to serve as the first president. From those roots the organization was designed to facilitate communication and social interaction between administrators and executives of the public safety departments in the cities and counties in and around Sacramento.
From those beginnings the organization has continued to grow and prosper and adopted a philanthropic goal to provide scholarships to Criminal Justice students enrolled in their Junior or Senior terms at California State University Sacramento. But, this history has not always been without inherent concerns. Over the past few years the NCPOA has been viewed as an organization for retired personnel and we have in a large measure lost our connection to the active duty personnel in our member agencies. For the continued growth and prosperity of the organization we must change this perception and attract new members to carry on the mission in the future. That is the reason for this message.
The NCPOA operates on a fiscal year from September through June each year and during those 10 months hold a luncheon hosted by the Police Departments and Sheriffs in the counties of Amador, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo. The luncheon is held on the third Thursday of the month and starts at 11:00 am and concludes by 1:30 PM.
NCPOA membership is open to anyone employed by any law enforcement agency, public safety department, coroner, probation, or corrections. Other supporters of public safety are considered for membership as associate members, if sponsored by a member and approved by the Board of Directors. If the employment is outside the State of California, membership is eligible if the employment was similar to comparable California employment.
If you are employed by one of the public safety organizations in the listed counties, you agency is most likely a host of one of the monthly luncheons. If you are looking for an item to fill out your resume and need those activities that demonstrate community involvement and organizational skills, NCPOA could be your ticket. There are always opportunities to get involved in the Board of Directors, scholarship program, and develop communications and networking with other agencies and individuals.

Please consider membership in the NCPOA, for only $25 per year it might be the best expenditure you will make and the rewards will far exceed the small cost.
